Natural spaces : communities take action

Community protected areas enable local communities to regain control of threatened natural spaces. They offer an alternative to the protected areas established and managed by governments. Several professional voluntary networks linked to IUCN have been pushing for recognition of this concept. One successful example has recently been launched in Casamance, southern Senegal.
