Promoting the use of ICT tools for agricultural information management

As part of CTA's programme on strengthening the methodologies, skills and tools for knowledge management in ACP institutions, a subregional training workshop is being held from 10-14 June 2013 in Cotonou, Benin.

The training is coorganised by CTA and The West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF/WECARD). It is targeted at CORAF/WECARD's stakeholders and will cover the use of ICT and information management tools for their effective integration in communication activities.

The objective of this training is to strengthen the capacities of a potential stakeholders group on how to share their knowledge and skills in content management through existing regional ICT systems, Web 2.0, Social Media, and the Monitoring and Evaluation of projects, products and information services as described in the CTA SMART Toolkit. The workshop also aims at raising awareness on mainstreaming these processes through the development of communication strategies and information management (ICM strategy development). In addition, the workshop will:

  • Assess the status of the existing information networks;
  • Support and catalyze the creation of networks in order to demonstrate the usefulness, the purpose and the added value of the various tools;
  • Establish a strategy for strengthening or operating networks through the exchange of information, knowledge and expertise at the sub-regional level to better engage countries and there should be a follow up at the end of the workshop.

At the end of the workshop, participants will have the necessary skills to use the web 2.0 tools and the existing systems of CORAF / WECARD and its partners; use social networks for information sharing and management of online communities; and develop tools and implement the monitoring and evaluation of projects, products and information services as described in the CTA SMART Toolkit. Participants will also be better able to promote the development of communication strategies and information management (ICM strategy development) within their institutions.

In total 57 people will take part in the workshop. It is expected that the training will have a snowball effect with the sharing of skills to other NARS stakeholders, including farmers and farmer organisations. This will result in an increase in quality and quantity of content management at a country level.

Krishan Bheenick, Senior Programme Coordinator, Knowledge Management, will represent CTA at this workshop.
