Family agriculture as a driving force for Caribbean agriculture

This year’s the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) will take place in Suriname, Paramaribo from 6-12 October 2014 under the theme: “Transforming Caribbean Agriculture through Family Farming”. The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries of the Government of Suriname is the organizer of the event in collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat. Major partners of the CWA activities include the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Caribbean Agricultural Research & Development Institute (CARDI), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and CTA.  

In his welcome message prior to CWA 2014, His Excellency Soeresh Algoe, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries stressed the importance of this year’s theme: “Family farming is the backbone of our food production. Fostering, uplifting and transforming this institute of family farming should be our main goal when we are thinking about ensuring national and Regional food security, and promoting a healthy lifestyle.”  

During one week, policymakers, experts, researchers, academics, farmers, the private sector, women, youth, media  and institutional actors from the Caribbean will come together to discuss current strategic issues regarding and recommend policy actions for the future of agriculture in the Caribbean.

In addition to the ministerial meetings, seminars and workshops, field visits will be conducted to agricultural, fisheries-, aquaculture- and livestock businesses as well as the first Suriname Agro Food Event – SAFE, comprising of an exhibition and a trade fair.  

Several seminars and technical sessions include: food value chain development, climate change and climate smart agriculture, innovating agri production systems, policy and strategy for development, youth and women in agriculture, sps systems for agri-development.  

The CWA is the premier event on the Agriculture calendar in the Caribbean Region. It brings together the major stakeholders in agriculture and related sectors to have an opportunity to dialogue and forge a common vision for the repositioning of agriculture and the enhancement of rural life.  

As a facility to place agriculture and rural life on the “front burner” of regional integration activities, CWA will enable the key decision-makers in the public and private sectors to better acknowledge the importance of agriculture and rural life to the economic, social and environmental stability of the region.
