World Soil Day 2014

December 5, 2014

Today marks the first observance of World Soil Day and the launch of the United Nations' designated International Year of Soils.

The International Year of Soils aims to connect people with soils and raise awareness on their importance. Engaged in knowledge-brokering on issues of agricultural and rural development, CTA is also part of this global endeavour.

Through the production and distribution of digital and print publications, the Centre strives to effectively link people to soil-related knowledge.

One of these publications is “Soils of the Caribbean” (2011), a comprehensive survey and analysis of the soils of the Caribbean region. Besides identifying common features of the soils and their management, this book also presents detailed studies of the soils of each of the countries of the Caribbean. The title, which was amongst the most popular books that year, provides a unique source of original research that is invaluable to researchers, practitioners and students alike.

Another useful publication elaborating on soils is “Trench Gardening” (2013), an 8-page fold-out leaflet, practical for use in the field and easy to read, which gives some background to the subject of Trench Gardening, outlines processes and provides tips, tables and explanatory line drawings.
