Joint technical consultative meeting in West Africa

Between CTA and the region's intergovernmental organisations and professional agricultural organisations

April 24, 2015

A joint technical consultative meeting between the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) and West African intergovernmental organisations was held on 21 and 22 April 2015, at the UEMOA Commission headquarters in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). Representatives of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Permanent Interstates Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) were in attendance. The aim of the meeting was to coordinate actions related to the transformation of the region's agriculture. The professional agricultural organisations, namely the Network of Farmers' and Agricultural Producers' Organisations of West Africa (ROPPA) and the Network of West African Cereal Professionals (ROAC) were also in attendance. The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr. Ibrahima DIEME, the Commissioner responsible for Food Safety, Mines and the Environment (DSAME) of UEMOA.

The main purpose of the meeting was to establish areas of cooperation between CTA and the region's intergovernmental organisations. More specifically, this meant:

- confirming CTA's willingness to work in close collaboration with the three intergovernmental organisations and discussing the technical aspects of this collaboration with regard to the priorities for action in the region;

- enabling CTA to familiarise itself with the other initiatives in progress in the sub-region and identifying possible synergies in the implementation of its regional business plan for West Africa;

- synergising CTA's activities with the initiatives and programmes in progress in the Sahel region and West Africa;

- agreeing on cooperative areas and actions to promote the collaboration between CTA and the intergovernental organisations;

- preparing a checklist combined with a road map for implementing the cooperative actions.

The meeting closed with the production of a draft joint Aide-mémoire which, once finalised and approved, will be used as a working document for the collaboration between CEDAO, UEMOA, CILSS and CTA.
