Pacific Agriculture Ministers agree to hold the first Pacific Week of Agriculture in 2017

Ministers of agriculture from South West Pacific nations have decided to launch a Pacific Week of Agriculture in 2017, following the model of the Caribbean Week of Agriculture.

This event will will facilitate closer collaboration, coordination and networking in the agricultural sector in the region. The decision follows a proposal presented jointly by CTA, FAO and the South Pacific Commission (SPC) at the 11th Meeting of the South West Pacific Ministers of Agriculture, held in in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 11­–14 May 2015.

Michael Hailu, CTA’s Director, presented the proposal on behalf of the three organizations. Vanuatu offered to host the first meeting in 2017. The concept of the Pacific Week of Agriculture and Vanuatu’s offer received overwhelming support from the Ministers. 

The Ministers also endorsed the setting up of a planning committee for the first Pacific Week of Agriculture and several countries expressed interest in joining the committee.
