On 2 February 2016, H.E. Dr Dylan Vernon, Ambassador of Belize to the Netherlands and to the European Union (UE), visited CTA headquarters to discuss possible future work by CTA in Belize. He was accompanied by three high-level trade and development representatives from Belize; Ms Lejia Melanie Gideon, Manager for Enterprise and Innovation of BELTRAIDE (Belize Trade and Investment Development Service); Ms Shahera McKoy, Manager of Export Belize; and Mr Bastiaan Van Helden, Advisor to the Embassy of Belize.

Ambassador Dylan and his colleagues met with CTA senior staff and discussed opportunities for developing technical cooperation between the Centre and existing initiatives in Belize, including those involving the private sector and other development actors. BELTRAIDE is applying best practices in their trade and business portfolio, building strong linkages between academia and the private sector to foster innovation and entrepreneurship, and building capacity of small and medium-sized enterprises to take advantage of opportunities in local, regional and international markets.

"BELTRAIDE is willing to share their knowledge and best practices with other Caribbean agencies to ensure growth and sustainability in the agri-food sector,” noted Juan Cheaz, CTA Senior Programme Coordinator for agricultural policy and value chains in the Caribbean. “CTA must take advantage of this huge potential to reinforce its Regional Business Plan for the Caribbean in the area of agribusiness."
