CRFM conducted the meeting as part of the Caribbean Week of Agriculture 2016 being conducted under the theme "Investing in Food and Agriculture."
One of the priorities being discussed at the regional meeting is reducing the region's food import which currently amount to four billion dollars. One of the plans to do this is by developing marine capture fisheries and aquaculture across the Caribbean and build a Caribbean cuisine brand.
The region is looking into tapping into the global industry on seafood.
As of recent, fisheries sectors have been dealing with influx of sargassum seaweed that has been affecting marine ecosystems in Caribbean waters. The council is also trying to find a collective protocol on how to respond to this phenomena.
There are also discussions to support the establishment of a World Fisheries University in the region, an initiative that also has the support of the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission of the Food and Agriculture Organization.
The CFRM was attended by Executive Director Milton Haughton who has responsibility of the development of Marine Fisheries and Aquaculture industries of the country. The seventeen members of the council attended the meeting.
