CTA has recently interviewed Torin Gilalta, technical officer at the Caribbean Agri-business Association (CABA). CABA works to provide a private sector mechanism to facilitate organized, coordinated planning and development of regional programmes and projects in the agri-business sector in CARICOM. With help from CTA, CABA has been able to build an e-commerce platform (www.cabacaribbean.com & www.mycaribbeanshop.com). CABA also has a social media platform (www.talkagri.com) and a programme that certifies basic agricultural skills (www.agri-educate.com). Most recently, CABA has established the Caribbean Agri-business Export Company (CABEXCO).

CTA has recently interviewed Marissa Areli, Senior Data Officer at Women in Business Development Incorporated (WIBDI). WIBDI is dedicated to strengthening Samoan village economies and promote fair trade. Marissa Areli joined WIBDI in July 2015. Her work involves transferring farmer information, such as type of production, income status and village name into online reports, to help connect farmers to the market and tourists to the farmers.

Collecting and analysing data, and presenting information that smallholders can understand and act on will be key to advancing agriculture in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries. Farming associations and agri-enterprises already provide members and customers with information and advice on crops, markets and finance. The contact systems farm groups and businesses have in place could be leveraged to deliver tailored information to smallholders.

There is a range of current weather information that are available on the internet. Ready access to ‘open weather data’ means that there is a huge potential for embedding weather information into a variety of web and mobile applications that would be helpful to smallholder farmers. In November 2017, CTA brought together practitioners, policy makers and academics in The Hague to explore practical and strategic challenges in adapting open weather data for applications that smallholder farmers could exploit to drive productivity.
