Banners of the first PWA have been raised in different locations in Port-Vila and the people in Vanuatu have been informed during the past couple of months, weeks and days through various articles, reports and interviews in the traditional and in the social media concerning the preparations and the countdown towards the official opening of that regional event in Port-Vila.

The first ever Pacific Week of Agriculture will have a multi-faceted approach to Agriculture with the first part of the week from Monday 16th to Wednesday 18th October highlighting Vanuatu's leadership at the national level on Agritourism initiatives in the Pacific.

The first three days will also be complemented by a number of partner-led side events in what is being referred to as the PWA Showcase and exhibitions.

The PWA2017 will culminate in two very important meetings for the sector - the Heads of Agriculture and Forestry Services meeting hosted by the Pacific Community, and the Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry Services meeting hosted jointly by the Pacific Community and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

The idea of hosting a Pacific Week of Agriculture (PWA) was born out of the success of the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA). This followed from discussions held at the 13th CWA in Paramaribo, Suriname.

Vanuatu drove this initiative and tabled the concept of a Pacific Week of Agriculture (PWA) at the 11th UN FAO South West Pacific Ministers of Agriculture Meeting in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The idea received unanimous support and paved the way for a number of regional initiatives including the first Pacific Week of Agriculture in Nadi, Fiji in 2015.
