2nd Africa Climate Smart Agriculture Alliance

2nd Africa Climate Smart Agriculture Alliance

Event Overview

The NEPAD Agency will convene the 2nd Africa Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) Alliance scheduled for 11-13 October, 2016 in Nairobi, Kenya, under the auspices of the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. The theme for the meeting is: “From Agreement to Action: Implementing African INDCs for Growth and Resilience in Agriculture”. Michael Hailu, CTA Director, will represent the Centre at the event.

At the 31st African Union Summit (Malabo, 2014), Heads of State and Government emphasized the importance of the agriculture and climate change by endorsing the NEPAD programme on agriculture and climate change. An integral part of the programme is the African Climate-Smart Agriculture Alliance which is to support the AU Vision to have at least 25 million smallholder households practicing CSA by 2025 in line with CAADP’s 2015-25 Results Framework. This Alliance was officially launched in Ethiopia in May 2015 as a mechanism for dialogue, agenda-setting, resource alignment and harmonisation in the efforts to support the scaling-up of CSA in Africa.

Climate Smart Agriculture contributes to the achievement of the new sustainable development goals (SDG) and aims to address food and nutrition security and climate challenges looking at the three dimensions of sustainability (economic, social and environmental).
