Farmer Field School and digitalisation

Farmer Field School and digitalisation

Event Overview

Thirty years after the creation of Farmer Field School (FFS), the landscape of knowledge and information has changed dramatically. Challenges with infrastructure, digital literacy, gender-digital divide, cost of access and capacity development need to be addressed to promote sustainable use of ICTs in FFS. On this basis, the FFS team produced an initial report highlighting the trends in ICT and possible opportunities for FFS.

The workshop brings together key practitioners and experts on adult education, farmer empowerment and digital platforms, to discuss the role of digitalisation for FFS programmes. The key objectives are to:

  • Discuss opportunities and risks of digitalisation for FFS and like-minded approaches;
  • Share experiences on the use of digital technologies and platforms to support learning, education and community empowerment;
  • Identify key lessons learned and recommendations for integration of digital technologies in FFS programmes.

Chris Addison, CTA Sr Programme Coordinator, Data4Ag, presents the findings from the Data4Ag project with farmers organisations.

    Achieving food security for all is at the heart of FAO's efforts – to make sure people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. FAO's three main goals are: the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; the elimination of poverty and the driving forward of economic and social progress for all; and, the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources, including land, water, air, climate and genetic resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
