Biography
Chipo Msengezi is Project Coordinator for the GODAN Action project at CTA. She has worked in the ICT4D, capacity development and knowledge management sector for nine years. In this time Chipo has worked on various programmes in Sub-Sahara Africa to enhance capacity amongst the research and education communities in the latest information tools and advocate for the adoption of new technologies that drive development.

Data is only be valuable if it can be accessed and used. Unfortunately, access to data is challenged in many countries by a lack of open data policies in many sectors of the economy – including agriculture.

This declaration, along with the establishment of large institutions, fueled the expansion of Dodoma from a small town of about 45,000 people in 1973 to 410,956 people in 2012. This development has culminated in increased land demand for various urban and agricultural functions.

The objective of this research is to understand the role of farmer organisations (FO) and cooperatives in the agriculture data ecosystem. It details for each stage of the crop cycle, the findings in terms of data use, needs, and challenges and contains a summary of the findings in the form of recommendations for farmer organisations and cooperatives in terms of farmer profiling activity.
