Biography

Dr Washington Otieno has over 25 years of experience in agricultural research and development, specialising in plant protection and agricultural biosecurity. Over the past 10 years, he has engaged in a number of initiatives that support capacity development for the improvement of plant health systems in developing countries. He joined CABI in 2013 and currently heads the Plantwise programme.

An estimated 40% of crops grown annually are lost to pests. Due to increased trade, swift international travel, tourism and climate change, pests spread more rapidly. This results in damage that reduces productivity and income, whilst also causing adverse effects on biodiversity, increasing farmers’ reliance on pesticides and vulnerability to climate damage.
