Cook Islands Agritourism Policy Setting Workshop 2018

Cook Islands Agritourism Policy Setting Workshop 2018

Aperçu de l'événement

A two-day workshop under the theme of " Policy Setting for Improved Linkages Between Agriculture, Trade and Tourism: Strengthening the Local Agrifood sector and Promoting Healthy Food in The Cook Islands" will take place in Avarua, Cook Islands from 25-26 September 2018

Travel, tourism and hospitality represent 10% of the world’s GDP and generate one in ten jobs. The US$ 1.4 trillion tourism market presents an unparalleled opportunity for the small island developing states that are major tourist destinations, but otherwise have limited resources. Realising this opportunity requires a significant increase in local content used by the tourism and hospitality sector, especially for food and beverages. Improved linkages between agriculture and tourism are one way to achieve this goal.

The objective of the agritourism project is to promote sustainable use of local food by the tourism industry through a favourable agritourism policy in the Cook Islands. The Agritourism Policy Setting Workshop brings together all key stakeholders in the agriculture, tourism, trade and health sectors, including government ministries, agribusinesses, agro-producers, chefs, farmers’ organisations and technical organisations, with the aim of developing further linkages between agriculture, trade and tourism sectors to support local businesses in serving tourism-related markets in the Cook Islands .

The two-day workshop on " Policy Setting for Improved Linkages Between Agriculture, Trade and Tourism: Strengthening the Local Agrifood sector and Promoting Healthy Food in the Cook Islands" is part of a CTA supported project on Agritourism Development on Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) promoting new economic opportunities with the tourism industry through conducive policies. The workshop is organised by the Government of Cokk Islands in collaboration with CTA, the Pacific Island Private Sector Organisation (PIPSO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO), and the Pacific Community (SPC). It takes place in Rarotonga, Cook Islands on 25 and 26 September 2018.
