A 35-year legacy of agricultural knowledge


Over 35 years, CTA accumulated more than 5,000 items of agricultural knowledge in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, which will be preserved and available through CABI.


CTA provided information on agriculture and rural development for 79 countries, and created a vast publication collection which includes around 300 books, 195 issues of SPORE magazine and other material currently held on CD-ROM or memory sticks. The topics covered include gender, climate-smart agriculture and small-scale livestock production.


CTA has had significant impact in providing scientific information on agriculture and rural development in Africa, Caribbean and Pacific. It has published journals, books and miscellaneous materials, either alone or in collaboration with other research or development organizations, including CABI. The collection is a valuable archive of knowledge for regions where there is often little or no relevant information available. For example, nearly 60 per cent of stakeholders who read CTA's Digitalisation of African Agriculture Report used it in their work. By documenting, sharing and scaling up agricultural innovation, CTA achieved significant improvements in incomes, productivity and food security.


After CTA’s closure in December 2020, non-profit agriculture development organization CABI has agreed to preserve the research collection. Items will be indexed on CAB Abstracts, regarded as the foremost database for agriculture and used in research and higher education around the world, and made available through the Open Access Global Agricultural Research Archive (GARA). CABI already holds an extensive collection of more than 13 million records and 500,000 full-text articles. The process will include digitisation of existing print documents and making them accessible and discoverable.

Continuing CTA's legacy

On the announcement of its closure, CTA received requests from several organisations to continue its activities. In accordance with a legacy plan approved by its Executive Board, CTA transferred a number of its assets to its key strategic partners. These organisations showed committed leadership, engaged partners and strong institutional and financial support to build on the legacy assets and continue the programmes.
