CTA has supported chefs to act as agents of development and ambassadors of local cuisine and sustainable farming and sourcing practices, particularly in the Pacific and Caribbean, which rely heavily on tourism, including agri-tourism.
Chefs for Development (Chefs4Dev) is an initiative which aims to promote stronger linkages between value chain actors in the culinary and agriculture sectors, with a view to enhancing the contribution made by healthier, locally sourced food and agrifood products to menus in food establishments across the Caribbean, South Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The online platform www.chefs4dev.org is a unique information ecosystem which brings together key actors (farmers, agribusiness, policy-makers, chefs), resources, news, activities and information under one roof.
The Chefs for Development online community enables chefs to share experiences and recipes, promote food tourism, local and sustainable farming and contribute to development. It has provided chefs with networking and training opportunities in order to spread their messages wider.
The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the specialised agency for agriculture of the Inter-American System that supports agricultural development and rural well-being, will continue to promote the development of agri-tourism in the Caribbean region. It will manage and enhance the Chefs for Development Platform developed by the CTA. This will involve disseminating stories of Caribbean food, profiling chefs and publishing recipes, manuals and culinary directories.
